Harrower, M. H. and Grinker, Roy R. The Stress Tolerance Test. This paper is subtitled Preliminary Experiments with a New Projective Technique Utilizing both Meaningful and Meaningless Stimuli. The formulation of this test was stimulated by needs of military psychiatry. The need here studied is that of an objective procedure to determine the presence of combat stimulated anxiety not yet mastered by men after their combat experience. An attempt was made to assess the capacity of the ego to master the anxiety. The test includes part of the Rorschach Inkblot Series, part of the Harrower Inkblot Series and a set of pictures in some ways analogous to the material used in Murray's Thematic Apperception Test. It seems that certain clearly demonstrable differences exist between the performance of patients with operational fatigue and the control subjects in the Stress Tolerance Test. These differences can be expressed qualitatively and quantitatively and the extent to which certain characteristic answers appear in a record seems to bear a direct relationship to the severity of the case. The ability to handle the experience objectively rather than retreat from it or relieve it too closely indicates the progress along the return path to stability. The test proved valuable as an objective measure of the degree of the patient's improvement.
Gottschalk, Louis A. A Study of Conditioned Vasomotor Response in Ten Human Subjects. The vasomotor system of 4 of 10 subjects was conditioned rapidly to a light stimulus. A faradic current was used as the unconditioned stimulus and the vascu
