The material presented in these lectures has constituted the content of Dr. Brill's post graduate instruction on the development and principles of psychoanalysis for students at the New York Psychiatric Institute at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University during the annual courses for the past 15 years. It is a delightfully written book in which psychoanalytic concepts, personal experiences in the application of psychodynamic procedures in a large clinical practice, and historical incidences are blended into a story of progress. The author is a man old in experience but young in mental agility, and one who has played a major role in the development of psychoanalysis in this country, particularly in its application to the various problems presented by the psychoses. His numerous friends and students are well pleased that he has now made available these informative experiences and impressions in print.
