This volume contains a series of papers by sixteen authors, well known in the field; Ribble, Levy, Van Ophuijsen, Mahler, Bruch, Zachry, Klopfer, Pacella, Doshay, Bradley, Bender, Naumberg, Despert, Allen, Slavson, and Hambrecht. As the editors say in the preface ‘During the years 1943 and 1944 a series of lectures in Child Psychiatry and Child Guidance was given at the New York State Psychiatric Institute and Hospital by lecturers considered as leading authorities in their fields. The selection of topics was more or less confined to those areas of child psychiatry in which investigations and observations had opened up new perspectives’. Thus the subjects cover anxiety in infants, maternal overprotection, primary conduct disturbances, ego psychology in behaviour problems, psychosomatic approach, utilization of school environment in therapy, personality diagnosis, EEG in behavior disorders, male sex delinquency and community responsibilities, psychoses, organic brain conditions, fantasy and reality in art expression, play analysis, combined psychotherapy with children and parents, child analysis, group therapy, and psychiatric social case work. This certainly is an extensive as well as intensive sampling of material in the handling of the child. Most of the articles have short bibliographies appended. The volume should prove of value to beginners in the field, it presents valuable summaries for experienced workers, and it should be suggestive for new research directions. [A. N. F.]
