This most informative book by universally well known authors presents a part of the Indian Education Research Project supported by the Committee on Human Development of the University of Chicago and the United States Office of Indian Affairs. The cooperative research on which the book is based has been carried on since 1941 by workers selected from the fields of anthropology, sociology, linguistics, psychology, psychiatry, medicine, education and administration.
The plan was made to investigate the personality development of a thousand children, 6 to 18 years of age, selected from two or more communities in each of five tribes, namely, Hopi, Navaho, Papago, Sioux and Zuni. This book and the companion one by the same authors, entitled The Navaho, deal with the development of the culture and of the individual Navaho character and personality. The present book attempts to bring together all that has been discovered about the Navaho psychology and personality. The Navahos refer to themselves as “The People”, which explains the title of the book. The contents are exceedingly interesting accounts of typical personality traits, child rearing practices, explanations of testing programs, and the general psychological makeup of these people. It presents the findings of the most thorough investigation ever made of the Navahoes as it represents an integration of methods, of different points of view from various disciplines of science and is based upon many years of field work by different investigators.
