This is the third German edition of A. Freud's well-known little book on child analysis. It contains the four lectures given in 1926 to the Teacher's Institute of the Vienna Psychoanalytic Society, as well as the lecture on the theory of child analysis given before the Tenth International Psychoanalytic Congress in Innsbruck on September 3, 1927. There have been no changes made in the text of the book since the first edition. This little volume needs no special comment since it is deservedly widely known and read by all interested in this field. It remains together with Klein's book one of the outstanding pieces of work on child analysis of the Freudian school. The author's German style remains refreshingly simple, vivid and clear. There is much of the flavor of a lecturer speaking directly and intimately to her audience. Curiously enough, her style reminds one very greatly of that of her famous father.
Recently we have had a second edition in English of this book also printed in London. The English edition under the title “The Psychoanalytical Treatment of Children” is the more valuable because it contains the author's 1945 essay on indications for child analysis together with bibliography and some valuable translator's comments. The English translation of Anna Freud's work will certainly be the one preferred by most readers in this country. This reviewer can only add that he would urge all who are not familiar with this work to read and study it with care. In its own way, it is a little classic. [Joseph Zinkin.]
