The editors have undertaken to present various contributions to the psychoanalytic theory and practice as applied to the manic-depressive disorders. The book contains papers by Freud, Abraham, Sterba, Rado, Helene Deutsch, Georg Gero, E. Pichon-Riviere, Angel Garma, Edith Jacobson, Sandor Lorand, Bertram D. Lewin and Melanie Klein.
The material has been organized into four parts. Part one prepared by E. Pichon-Riviere consists of a history of the concepts of manic-depressive states from the time of Hippocrates to the present. Part two, the largest section of the book is devoted to psychoanalytic investigations, theories and speculations presented by the qualified authors mentioned above. Of the twenty papers, eight are from Freud's publications.
Part three is concerned with the psychoanalysis of manic states in which the studies of Freud, Lewin and Deutsch comprise the text which deals chiefly with transitory and chronic hypomania. Part four presents Melanie Klein's investigations into the psychogenesis of manic-depressive states.
The collection of this large amount of pertinent material and its arrangement in book form should be of great service to practitioners and teachers who read the Spanish language.
