The prologue states that “today we have nine million people in the country over sixty-five years of age. In 1980 there will be twenty-six million.” “Old people have resources for living and for making useful contributions to society which are almost completely untapped today.” The papers of this volume originally were delivered in a course, Mental Health in Old Age (delivered during the year 1940-41). The papers covering the main aspects of the aging process are by Lawton, Lowrey, Frank, Randall, Barker, Lewis, Hochhauser, Bryan, Emery, Hall, Hartwell, Brunot, and Hill; an impressive list to be sure.
