Bristow Rogers is the story of a talented, educated American Negro facing the problem of finding meaningful existence in a “complex” society. All the things he had been taught at home, at school, in business, had been inadequate to provide him with necessary peace of mind. This created, in turn, an abnormal anxiety which forced him to seek therapy. With the aid of a psychoanalyst, he investigates himself and his problem. The major portion of the book is devoted to Bristow Rogers' written free associations which come out of the analytic situation.
