This volume is subtitled, “The Economic and Social Composition of Governing Boards of Thirty Leading American Universities.” The preface says, “This book has been written in the hope it will enlarge the perspective of American teachers, parents, students, educational administrators, and other citizens in viewing the forces that are shaping
American education, public and private, particularly at the college and university level.” The thirty universities include almost the complete membership of the Association of American Universities. A total of 727 different persons are studied. The volume closes with numerous tables, notes, and an index.
