This book which bears the subtitle “Studies in the Constructive Energies of the Psyche” was first published in 1935 as an elaboration of a manuscript entitled “Körperschema” published in Germany in 1923. The present new edition of this valuable text will be most welcome to students in psychology, neurology and psychiatry, all of whom should acquaint themselves with the ideas pertaining to the postural model.
Schilder's original researches on the Körperschema (schema of the body) or the body image stimulated a number of investigations in America and other countries which illuminated several aspects of the personality. He developed the theory, based on mechanisms of the central nervous system and on the insight gained from psychoanalysis, that reveals the personality as a unit and attempts to explain many problems in brain pathology. There is an extensive list of references.
