This volume consists of miscellaneous papers dating variously from 1888 to 1938. The bulk of his volume is made up of Freud's shorter writings published since the issue of the fourth volume of papers in 1925. But an opportunity was taken of including a number of earlier papers which had, for one reason or another, been previously omitted from the series. There are also a few papers from the author's very limited posthumous works which had been collected and published in German under the title of “Schriften aus dem Nachlass” in 1941. About twelve of the papers in this volume now appear in English for the first time. These include “Screen Memories” (), “Resistances to Psychoanalysis” (), “The Subtleties of a Parapraxis” () and “Splitting of the Ego in the Defensive Process” (). Of the remainder of the volume, the majority were first published in English in the International Journal of Psychoanalysis. All these have been revised and several have had new translations made for this volume. Thus the book contains such important papers as “Remarks upon the Theory and Practice of Dream-Interpretation” (), “Analysis Terminable and Interminable” (), “Libidinal Types” (), “Female Sexuality” (), “Constructions in Analysis” (). We also have here a paper entitled “Some Elementary Lessons in Psychoanalysis” () which was left unfinished and appears to have been the beginning of a fresh version of the “Outline of Psycho-analysis”
