The publisher of these volumes plans the publication or re-publication of a number of Schilder's most important works. This will spread over several years. Included in the series will be a number of his works never before translated into English. The series starts off with the re-printing of the two works indicated above. The volume on “Brain and Personality” was previously published as No. 53 of the Monographs Series of the Journal of Nervous and Mental Diseases. This has been out of print for some time. This present re-printing is essentially the same as the original edition except for the absence of Dr. Nolan Lewis’ preface. The volume consists of an expansion of a series of lectures given at Phipps in 1928.
The “Image and Appearance,” was originally published in England in 1935 as No. 4 of the Psyche Monographs. The present edition is the first in this country, and is identical with the English printing. As these volumes have been long familiar to students in this country they hardly need an extended review. As always with Schilder, both volumes contribute to “filling in the gap between the organic and the functional.” Considering the brilliance and competence of Schilder's thinking, it is a more than useful service to neuro-psychiatry to keep his works alive and to have translations of those which have remained hidden to the English reader. We look forward with real interest to seeing the series of volumes extend to include such translations. These volumes remain valuable, stimulating and merit careful study.
