This book by a known authority on the subject, a professor of social administration at Ohio State University, is chiefly a clear, condensed survey of numerous facts and of a vast amount of literature on crime. It is an extremely valuable source book marked by a cautious approach, avoidance of exaggeration, and a continuous awareness of the vast complexities of the problem of crime. The author reproduces statistics covering the United States showing that of 100 crimes known to the police, only 5.5 percent lead to a conviction and only 3.5 percent to a prison sentence.
