This book contains a collection of significant papers of historical value. Some of them appeared in German some twenty years ago and are valuable landmarks in psychoanalytic theory and practice as presented by one of our outstanding pioneers in this field.
There are nine topics offered, namely, the turning point in the life of Napoleon I, the sense of guilt, the psychology of pity, on the psychology of comedy, the riddle of Shakespeare's Macbeth, the problem of the duplicated expression of psychic themes, the psychology of the festival of Christmas and in collaboration with Dr. Edmund Bergler, instinct dualism in dreams and transference and love.
These papers are unique and informative and the concepts expressed are still by and large useful, although as should be expected there is practically no departure from the early orthodox Freudian pronouncements. Some of the selections are, of course, familiar to psychoanalysts but it was an excellent idea to have them available together in book form.
