Let us now recall that in George's first dream, the front legs of the throne were longer than the hind ones. The dead twin preceded him in birth and was probably bigger than he was. An attempt to reverse these roles appeared in the 12th session, in a dream:
At a skiing resort, at the entrance of the dressing rooms, I saw an old woman of about sixty. One of her legs was desiccated and thin. She hobbled. Then a young woman of about thirty came along, hopping like a rabbit, to the door of the men's dressing room.
Desiccation is less than decomposition. It is partial mummification. The old woman is twice as old as the younger one. Twice, essentially, means the same thing as twins. While the older woman is bigger (by age), the younger one is more alive (again by age). The front legs of a rabbit are short, the hind ones are long. The tendency at reversal is clear. The choice of mature women instead of neonates is an antithetic support for this assumption. Sixty and thirty add up to ninety, and the number nine can always be suspected to serve as a reference to the nine months of gestation. Dressing is a sartorial symbol for growing up. When the younger woman hops to the men's dressing room, we have a hint at an increase of the heterosexual drive.
It looks as if the dream was a fantasy of dethroning the late and unlamented George I (Gregor) from his status as first born, and permitting George II to take his place. That this dethronement may have been conceived of as the elimination of a fundamental affective component of his homosexuality, appeared—for the first time—in his 16th session:
I was in a men's toilet in some kind of an amusement park. I took another man's coat by mistake, and the man took mine.
Page 111Later, I saw him behind a concession counter, and traded overcoats with him. A while after, I wanted to go back to the men's toilet, but could not find it. Through a window, however, I saw people walking up to this toilet. I was mad, cursed, and swore for not being ab
