I admittedly feel very close to this book which Professor Tillich has dedicated to my husband and myself. I shall attempt in the following remarks to identify what I believe is of greatest value in terms of therapy and what I feel is of value primarily to those for whom the religious, especially Christian, symbols are fully alive. May I be allowed to add by way of introduction, while still in the personal vein, that I share the feeling of those paragraphs in his book in which Tillich speaks with admiration and gratitude of the tolerant attitude of this country toward its immigrants: “America did not try to Americanize us, but allowed us to contribute in our own way to the American scene, combining creatively the old and the new.” It is this creative combination of the old and the new which I as a therapist and as a person find inspiring in Tillich's work.
