In his Interpretation of Schizophrenia, Arieti2 first distinguished the stormy personality as a pre-psychotic personality type distinct from the schizoid personality. His description contains 10 features which can be considered diagnostic:
Stormy personalities adopt all types of attitudes in turn, and all to an extreme degree.
Changes are often sudden, violent and drastic.
Such personalities are always searching for a meaningful way of life.
They are always reaching out for people.
Anxiety governs their lives.
Their lives are a series of crises.
They are concretely concerned with who they are and what people expect of them.
They have an inability to build a relatively stable sense of selfidentity.
