Although I have been mulling over the observations contained in this paper for a considerable period of time, I finally decided to write them down when a colleague described the following incident. He and a friend had gone to eat at a neighborhood restaurant. After they had been there a while, his companion remarked that the same woman seemed to be going through the door repeatedly! Although this seemed ridiculous, it contained enough truthful elements to warrant a serious study.
Many people have commented upon this type of woman, found in all large cities of this country. However, to my knowledge, no study of her has been made.
This ‘doll’ is between the ages of 30 and 35, very well-dressed in die height of fashion. Her grooming is impeccable and her hair is styled in the latest vogue. Her jewelry, of which there is a good deal, is likely to be heavy and noisy. She tends to be overdressed for the “ordinary” occasion. During the day, she uses a good deal of makeup, including eye shadow, mascara, etc., which also seems striking and inappropriate. Perhaps one would not be quite so struck by her appearance at a cocktail party as one is in seeing her attired in her customary fashion in the neighborhood shops. In an effort to
