It is the history of ideas that they are born, as is true of all birth processes, in the pain of someone. The psychological field of force that generates these creative events is an acute struggle within some person. In a conflict between two urges equally forceful, each is insistent in its thrust towards its own value. The emotional turbulence produces in the individual an anguish that is ultimately unbearable. He must find a way out. The clinical psychopathologist is familar with the disintegrative and disruptive forms these solutions, seemingly irresolvable otherwise, can take. Some people however are too proud to retreat into schizophrenia. Some are too strong to waste themselves endlessly in the mental meanderings of the neurotic's cogitations and muddlings. Their answer to an afflicting and obdurate reality is— the creation of a new reality. Their struggle has opened for them the way to new understandings. Eventually their reality is grasped by the world at large. The meaning and significance of their conceptions, at first completely strange and threatening to their contemporaries, gradually become intelligible so that eventually they offer to society-at-large a solution to disturbing problems. So it is that the rare, strong-willed personality, superb in intelligence and rich in imagination, starts a new phase in history.
