Dear Sir:
I would like to reply to Dr. Arno Gruen's so-called remarks on my work on “The Couch” in the Spring 1967 issue of The Psychoanalytic Review. Dr. Gruen seems to imply that my paper suggested that not using the couch would be a cure-all for all of the problems that exist in the analyst-patient relationship. Surely I implied no such thing and no one could be so naive as to do so. What I did raise as a question was whether the use of the couch might in itself constitute an additional and artificial interference in it. Dr. Gruen did not address himself at all to this question in his reply. In fact, he hardly addressed himself to my paper at all. Instead he wrote his own paper discussing issues of the analyst's detachment, the nature of analytic training, etc. But above all he set out to show how erudite he is by having no less than 24 quotations in an 8 page paper, a new record for The Psychoanalytic Review and perhaps an all-time record for all journals.
Sincerely,
Richard C. Robertiello
