A reader of the foregoing (Marie C. Nelson) suggests that I add the following to lines 5-8 of p. 515:
What does root is the need—when social chaos offers no adequate protective structure—to take refuge in disconcerting acts and alarming self-adornment as aggressive self-protection to actively ward off evil. And when this is sufficiently widespread, such grotesquerie of act and appearance assumes also the passive function of self-protective coloration. An instance of this might be the wearing of the Safari hat which proclaims at one and the same time: “I am a White Hunter and a harmless tourist.”
In this connection, attention is called to Mrs. Nelson's previous paper, published under the name of , “An Integrative Approach to Individual and Group Psychology.” This Review, Vol. 36, No. 4. 1949. pp. 389-401.
