Both long term psychoanalysis and brief psychotherapy evolved from Freud's techniques and experiments. Jones noted the quick and effective treatment of Gustav Mahler by Freud. Bruno Walter, the composer, wrote how Freud in six sessions in 1906 helped him return to active conducting. Freud's early premise of therapy was based on diagnosis of the psychodynamics and trauma involved and the rapid undoing of neurosis by making conscious the repressed material and uncovering resistances through interpretation. Because of the intricacies of the human psyche and the changing goals from symptom relief and removal to personality change, psychoanalysis has become lengthier.
