A deeper sense of a purposeful existence is necessary in this age of new barbarism—an age that transcends the Protestant ethic, and in which the characteristic form of government is neither totalitarianism nor democracy, but one that controls people by the often irresponsible bureaucratic and political mind. As Hannah Arendt has put it, is the “rule by Nobody” a situation in which “there is not one left who could even be asked to answer for what is being done”? Are we not trying to morally discredit our technocracy, where managers and experts try to manipulate men by the “myth of objective consciousness” and thus seek to rationalize our existence? The vision of the counter culture, the “lonely crowd,” and the “organization man” have been discredited. The majority of the new generation has accepted the new emphasis on an admixture of Western philosophy and religion, which has resulted in a pseudo-mysticism and visionary humanism. This has led to the primary position of the aesthetic-erotic life style that dominates contemporary modes of consciousness and behavior.
