Since its founding psychoanalysis has become many things to many people. It is a science of man, an anthropology, a branch of knowledge and a body of accumulated observations and generalizations about human nature and behavior. It is a scientific method, and investigative tool used by the science of psychoanalysis. It is a therapeutic procedure, the fountainhead of the varieties of psychotherapy.
Whereas as a science psychoanalysis is heterogeneous, spanning a number of disciplines, psychoanalysis as a method is homogeneous. As a science, psychoanalysis encompasses man as a psychological, biological, sociological, and cultural being. The method of psychoanalysis is psychological. Operationally, it is a kind of dialogue, a communication within a relationship, governed by specific rules of conduct.
