We are in agreement with Eigen's observation that there remain many unresolved questions concerning the complex inter-relations among intrapsychic conflict, developmental arrest, and the experience of self. Some of our latest thinking on this issue can be found in our paper, “Two Psychoanalyses or One?” which appeared in The Psychoanalytic Review, Fall 1981 (Volume 68, Number 3).
