This impressive work summarizes an ambitious 30-year clinical research involving 42 patients treated at and followed up by the Men-ninger Foundation. For a monumental achievement that will occupy a permanent place in the archives of psychiatry and psychoanalysis, major credit is due Dr. Wallerstein, not only for his dedication to this task, but for having surmounted the difficulties inherent in collating such a mass of data and weaving it into an orderly account.
As the author comments, the report is unique in that another such research may never be possible; subsequent legislation pertaining to invasion of privacy now prohibits various fact-gathering procedures employed in the lengthy follow-ups on terminated cases, data that added immeasurably to assessment of therapeutic efficacy.
