Beginning in the early 1980s, Jay Greenberg's contributions to psychoanalysis (, , b, c) have been considerable. He is probably best known for his oft-cited book, Object Relations in Psychoanalytic Theory (1983) which he coauthored with Steven Mitchell. Greenberg's thinking has now culminated in his latest work: Oedipus and Beyond.
The title of the book is actually ill-chosen: It does not do justice to the scope of the inquiry. While Greenberg does devote a chapter to (an interpersonalist's view of) the Oedipus complex, the book is hardly about the Oedipus complex. The book is nothing short of a critique of Freud's drive theory as well as structural theory.
