The following are thoughts as I read and are not always linked to something specific in Foucault, though always stimulated by the reading. Agreement being a calm and non-creative state, I won't discuss it here: most of the following are disagreements or addenda.
At the start of life, the infant is, I think, a biologic preparation, hardwired by genetics and by physical/chemical impingements in utero. Nothing yet that deserves to be called “mind” though having the necessary precursors for mind. In this state of biologic preparedness-so my theorizing goes-changes in the precursors to behavior occur from the same processes as those well studied in animals, such as (1) brain organization by hormones (sex hormones' effects are probably the best studied so far); (2) the expediting of new hardwiring epigenetically; (3) with critical period timing so that one structure of phase is necessary for the next; (4) conditioning-positive and negative-following the rules in cells, tissues, organs, and lower organisms; (5) what is not usually-ever?-described is “neutral conditioning”: neither positive nor negative reinforcement but simply impingement (i. e. communication) with as yet unmodified tissue;
