Left unmentioned in Dr. Bernard's paper was one of her most important legacies, her establishment of an Archive of her professional and personal papers at Columbia University's Health Sciences Library. It is an invaluable repository that documents how Dr. Bernard and a complex network of colleagues—judges, teachers, social workers, lawyers, doctors, political figures, psychoanalysts and psychiatrists—created programs and public forums that addressed the psychological and social needs of children born into a society troubled by racism and poverty. The result is a remarkable archival record of both a unique psychoanalytic career and a momentous period in American social history.
As this issue was being readied for publication, Dr. Viola W. Bernard died peacefully in her sleep, shortly after her 91st birthday.
