Dr. Fajardo's paper concerns the observed infant objectively perceived by the researcher in an experimental situation. This view can be contrasted to the reconstructed infant, intersubjectively perceived by the analyst in the clinical situation. We all know that the two situations are not congruent, that a leap of faith and scientific inference are required to make the one contribute to the other. Yet, of necessity, we all make this leap to enable us to deepen our clinical experience. The here and now of the therapeutic situation is always informed by the clinician's sense of normal and pathological development in general and by what in that development is most germane to the therapeutic moment.
