Lachmann and Beebe examine the relationship between transference and the process of structuralization. Like many others, they see the disruption and subsequent mending of selfobject transferences as a major route for structuralization in treatment. Transference is seen as operating within an interactive system, or intersubjective context, and not simply as a replication of the past. There is a basic theoretical assumption here of a representational world, that is created through the internalization of experience and that can be altered by treatment.
