We owe a debt of gratitude to Howard Baker and Margaret Baker for bringing to our attention an important but neglected area of theory in self psychology. To my knowledge, this is the first time a paper that deals with issues of biological endowment has been presented in a self psychology conference. In many of my published papers I have attempted to conceptualize a framework for the integration of biological and self psychological concepts (Palombo, 1979, 1985, 1987, 1991, 1993a,b, 1994, 1995; Palombo and Feigon, 1984). However, these efforts have largely gone unnoticed in self psychology circles. I therefore find it gratifying to participate in a discussion about this important contribution.
