The significance of psychoanalytic perspectives for brief psychotherapy is discussed in the report of a gay man practicing unsafe sex (known colloquially as “barebacking.”). The paper focuses both on understanding transference and counter-transference issues in work with this man.
This chapter is dedicated to the memory of Andrew Boxer, Founding Director of the Evelyn Hooker Center, Board Member, Horizons Community Services and a pioneer in the study of psychodynamic and life-course perspectives regarding gay and lesbian lives.
The assistance and support of Horizons Psychotherapy Service, Bruce Aaron, Former Director, and Mark Contorno, Present Director, together with our student interns, is gratefully acknowledged.
