Unlike previous issues, we have decided to provide readers on this occasion with two book reviews of Dr. Eda Goldstein's Object Relations and Self Psychology in Social Work Practice. We believe that our book reviewers for this issue, Dr. Jeffrey S. Applegate and Dr. Joseph Walsh, contributed two unique perspectives highlighting their own areas of expertise-in the case of Dr. Applegate, psychoanalysis in general and Winnicott's theories in particular, and in Dr. Walsh's case, the area of termination in social work practice.
Dr. Applegate's review is a detailed and beautifully written account of Goldstein's book, and in part grapples with the questions of similarities and overlaps between Kohut's self psychology and Winnicott's contributions to psychoanalytic theory. Dr. Applegate also raises the issue of clinical supervision as an essential aspect of practice. Dr. Walsh, on the other hand, pays particular attention to the issue of termination, or lack thereof, in Goldstein's book, drawing on his own expertise in the topic. We believe that these excellent reviews will inspire our readers to read Dr. Goldstein's book, and to reflect on some of the questions both reviewers raise.
