Freud's ideas about female superego development were not accepted by many psychoanalysts. Freud thought that women's superego was weak and women obeyed father's superego first and then husband's superego. In this paper female superego development will be explored in all development phases and the differences between boys and girls will be discussed. Cultural influences especially in conservative countries like Turkey may cause difficulties in female superego development. Sameness with the mother, more ambivalent feelings towards the mother than boys, more parental expectations from girls than from boys, nonapproval of aggression in girls, exertion of more restrictions and rules on girls than boys, sexual difference, no name for female's genitals, nonapproval of girls sexuality are the factors which make the superego development of girls more complicated and difficult than boys. This paper will discuss these factors by focusing on cultural issues in conservative countries.
