Loneliness is a concept that is not fairly included in the psychoanalytic literature. It is mostly mentioned as a symptom that the analysand cannot cope with. In this sense, the inability to tolerate loneliness is related to the absence of the object in the place that is expected, and is mainly referred to with infantile anxieties.
However, the presence of the object is not always sufficient to endure loneliness. The feeling of loneliness felt in a crowd of people reminds the dimension of loneliness that is independent of the object. According to Winnicott, it is the feeling of loneliness that leads to the formation of nucleus of the ego. Sometimes loneliness is preferred as a source of creativity as well.
