Loneliness is a painful, frightening experience that a person does everything to avoid. Loneliness includes a sense of distance accompanied by pain and discomfort and it can be felt together with many people. The difference between loneliness and being alone is important. When Winnicot speaks of capacity to be alone, he emphasizes the necessity of emotional maturity. According to Winnicott, the basis of the capacity to be alone is the experience of being alone in the presence of someone. Another evaluation can be made between the loneliness and emptiness. Emptiness is the feeling of non-connectedness and an experience losing the positively cathected object representatives. However, loneliness is different situation where there is the ability to maintain positive libidinal object representatives and intrapsychic connectedness.
