From Lacan's point of view, analytic process can be envisaged as the passage from jouissance to desire. This is specially the case of the analysis that prepares the analyzand to be an analyst. Lacan establishes an opposition between desire and jouissance. The subject can access to desire with the condition that his/her jouissance is prohibited. It is not the satisfaction of the drive but its lack that opens the way to desire. The prohibition of incest corresponds to the prohibition of the jouissance obtained from the mother. In the search of satisfaction of the drive, the subject has to go through demands addressed to the Other. The body that goes through the tortuous process of using the words, loses its jouissance. Thus, the latter can attain the status of being exterior to the body.
