The analyst's desire serves to define the place in which he/she has to situate in the analytical process. According to Lacan, the analyst should occupy a vacant place. When the analyst occupies it with his/her wishes, expectations and aims with respect to the analytical treatment, then the analyzand's unique wish is to act according to them, as he/she imagines them. This creates an alienation for the analyzand that constitutes a barrier to his/her access to desire. The condition to stay as an analyst depends on the possibility of situating oneself in the right place and faces one's own castration. To be able to sustain the analyzand's conflicts till their ultimate consequences and be responsible for his/her own unconscious is possible thanks to the analyst's desire.
