Based on the conclusion that the problem(atic)s of ‘inability to be oneself’ and ‘violence’ can be traced back to archaic stages in the historical/social sense, and to early object relationships in the personal/psychic sense, this paper discusses the role inability to be oneself plays in intersubjective relationships of ‘hierarchy,’ and in the ensuing intersubjective relationships of ‘domination,’ and consequently the relationship between violence and inability to be oneself. It was presented at “Discussions on Youth - IV” held on 13-14 April 2003 in Istanbul.
