It is Melanie Klein who defines the play as an indispensable element of child analysis technique. She considers that the child by playing expresses his/her unconscious fantasies symbolically and discharges his/her erotic and agressive drives, obtaining a satisfaction. Winnicott contributes to this discussion by emphasizing that during the play a common language is invented by the child and the adult in the potential space, making possible the sharing of an intimacy. Françoise Dolto accords a central place to the dimension of signification, that is language. The play and drawings of the child convey a meaning that is tightly related to the conflicted situation of his/her family.
