The author discusses an evolutionary perspective on the biological origins of ego defenses. The discussion is initiated by a biological critique of Freud's formulation on the death drive and how evolutionary biology contributes to the understanding of primitive ego defenses. The author defines projection as ability of conversion of an internal impulse to an external one, which is ultimately attributed to the capacity of the cerebral cortex in humans where the discussion is ended. At the end the author expresses a need for further research to be done in this direction in order to achieve a comprehensive account of the contributions of evolutionary biology on understanding the drive theory and the defense mechanisms.
