The “oceanic sensation” discussed by Freud in Civilisation and its Discontents in response to Romain Rolland opens up a whole new till now hardly considerd field of investigation: that of a both regredient and progredient attraction to the unlimited when the limits of the ego waver. This attraction is at times subjected to a regressive desire for fusion with the mother and, at others, in the case of psychotic patients overcome by the axiety of infinite regression, confronted with the threat of defusion. The “oceanic sensation”, evoked by R. Rolland in his Memoirs offers yet another outcome that appears to correspond to experiences of what might be called drive “hyperfusion” of a progredient connotation, which helps to affirm the presence of the self both in the world and to creation.
