A case story about a young girl whose mother was diagnosed manic depressive disorder has been analyzed in accordance to Julia Kristeva's conception of adolescence as an open psychic structure rather than a chronological stage.
The young girl who was unable to speak directly about herself and her own life and history was desperately seeking to merge with the analyst, longing to be understood by her without being obliged to use words. The analyst chose to maintain this illusion of merging for a certain time. This helped the patient to talk about herself indirectly by bringing to the sessions materials about different artistic creations such as films, paintings, novels. Especially speaking about her deep love towards a famous rock singer, Kurt Cobain who committed suicide, enabled her to work about her mourning concerning her internalized melancholic mother.
