While Freud has emphasized the concept of regression in relation to libidinal stages, Winnicott has contributed to it by giving a completely different meaning and referring it to the development of the ego. As the formation of the ego takes place in early childhood, it requires the existence of an adequate environment, symbolized by the caretaking mother. Regression in Winnicott's theory is the opposite of progression. In situations where regression is necessary, the analyst in order tor reverse a progression that has operated by means of a false self, has to evaluate the patient's psychical organization. Regression supposes the existence of an ego organization and the threat of a chaos. Situations in which a false self and a psychotic functioning dominate, are the evidence of an elaborated system of defenses in terms of the ego. So they would constitute indications for regression.
