Although in many languages, ‘image’ and words that are derived from it, have their root in the visual, it is used in many senses. Psychoanalysis is defined as a talking cure but it has been on the side of tendencies that oppose to the devaluation of image especially in the Mediterranean culture, due to both religious and philosophical reasons. Sigmund Freud has acknowledged dream and phantasy as the most important products of the human psyche and one of the most important elements of the psychoanalytic work. For Freud dreams are the royal road to the unconscious and phantasy is the foremost evidence of subjective reality. According to Freud representations stem from perceptions, and thing representations and word representations correspond to the conscious/unconscious distinction of the psyche. Many of the outstanding writers of contemporary psychoanalysis propose that psychoanalytic work should place importance on image as much as it does on words.
