Christopher Bollas, in his writings about the search for transformation, aesthetic moment and transformational object, describes each aesthetic experience as transformational and that the mother's care and the infant's experience of this handling as the first human aesthetics. Bollas suggests that adults, when they are searching for aesthetic moments and aesthetic experiences which consist of music, are actually searching for the experience of being transformed by the mother's aesthetics. In this article first the question as to whether or not listening to music connects individuals to earliest auditory experiences is being examined by the author. Then the author reviews the relevant psychoanalytic literature about the influence of the sound of the maternal voice on the child. And finally as listening is of crucial importance to both analyst and analysand, the author explores the role of music in psychoanalysis.
