This paper is an invitation for a fresh look at trauma, a concept that has accompanied psychoanalysis from its beginning and undergone changes with it. On one hand, it has become prevalent to the point of losing specific meaning. On the other, it refers to a crucial juncture that psychoanalysis cannot ignore or overlook. I suggest adding the notion of experiential modalities to better understand trauma within an experience- near frame, emphasizing the relationship between trauma and the death drive, or the experience of non-being. Individual, group and communal trauma are linked and illuminated when viewed through the prism of experiential modalities. Lastly, I describe the impact of shared communal trauma on the analyst and the patient.
