The paper takes as its point of reference Freud's Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality where Freud takes children's polymorphous perverse activity as a point of scientific study, and as something which continues to exist in all of us whether repressed or not. Perversion is defined broadly as a deviation from an original aim. The work of Grunberger and Chasseguet-Smirgel has highlighted how the perverse individual attempts to create an ideal universe that comes close to intrauterine life, but one filled with hatred and destructiveness, where every type of pregenital pleasure is permitted and considered superior to that of genital pleasure. Truth is perverted where the paternal function is abolished. This is seen in both the films Dogtooth and Miss Violence where delusional distortion of reality is brought about through isolation from the outside world. Miss Violence begins with a birthday celebration of eleven year old Angeliki, but as the link between the oedipal couple has been destroyed, the celebration of life can only lead to psychic death. The paper also takes up the relationship of perversion to narcissism as seen through the perverse narcissistic structures described by Rosenfeld as well as the relationship of perversion to depression where there is a failure to idealize pregenitality. This can also be seen in works of literature such as that of Oscar Wilde and Milton. Finally, perversion is seen as a way of thinking that distorts and bypasses the reality principal, through the illusion of being merged with and in possession of an ideal breast. Intercourse between internal and external reality is thus affected. Unfortunately, few who suffer perversions actually feel their suffering and so come for analytic treatment. Thus, their suffering is inflicted upon others.
