Interpretation is the main tool of psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic therapies and this paper is an attempt to understand the concept of interpretation by means of intensive literature review. Many definitions of it has been given, each of which is very enlightening and insufficient at the same time. Unlike the definition of interpretation, its purpose is much more precisely described in the analytic society. The role or the aim of interpretation is to bring the therapeutic change. This role is detailed throughout the essay. Interpretation is the agent of change hand-in-hand with the therapeutic relationship. Sources of interpretation and mechanisms of change are revised. Like the definitions, types of interpretation are also blurry areas. Instead of an effort to clear, the situation is tried to be shown as it is. And concluded by a metaphor, interpretation as a musical instrument which gives wonderful melodies when it is practiced long enough with the help of masters/supervisors, with the talent of the ear (listening, listening to listening) and with the elaboration of the participants.
